• Chairman of the Sowerby Bridge Gas & Water Works, and was involved in the procurement of land for the Sowerby Bridge Sewage Works
• President of the Sowerby Bridge Choral Society
• Active in the construction of the Sowerby Bridge Town Hall
• A member and the first Alderman of the West Riding County Council
• Master of the Ryburn [No 1283] Masonic Lodge. At his death, he was the oldest member and the oldest past master
• Chairman of the Halifax Board of Guardians

In 1846, he married Martha Emmett [1823-19??] of Thornton-in-Craven, in Bradford.
