A meeting about the use of country notes in Halifax [1808]

On 26th January 1808, a meeting of the tradesmen and others at the Talbot Inn was concerned that the increasing circulation of country notes in the town and neighbourhood ...

has become an evil which it is highly necessary to prevent, and for which we conceive there is no effectual remedy, but the tradesmen and other inhabitants of the town and neighbourhood, refusing to receive any notes in payment, except those drawn and circulated by regular bankers, and by that means discountenancing the circulation thereof.

We, therefore, whose Names are hereunto subscribed, do hereby declare, that we will not, from and after the first day of March next, on any pretence whatever, receive in payment, any country note or notes, by whomsoever drawn, save and except those drawn and circulated by regular bankers. And we do hereby recommend to the tradesmen and other inhabitants of the town and neighbourhood of Halifax, to refuse such notes in payment, after the day before mentioned, as we are determined to use our utmost exertions in order to discountenance the Circulation thereof
