General Points

The creation of Commercial Street was authorised in 1853.

Construction of the street began around 1880. There were previously buildings on the site. The area was cleared, and the new street finally opened at the end of the 19th century.

Suggested names were Oxford Street and New South Street.

On 14th March 1920, the Rev J. W. Hall preached a sermon entitled

The grave dangers of Commercial Street

It runs from Waterhouse Street to Portland Place.

The unnamed section of road between Ward's End and Portland Place is also a part of Commercial Street
