An Old Oak Bedstead at Shibden Hall

Arthur Comfort Drawing

A drawing of a bedstead at Shibden Hall, taken from Arthur Comfort's series In & About Our Old Homes

This fine old bedstead, of the time of Queen Elizabeth, appropriately finds a place at Shibden Hall.

Some 35 years ago, Mr John Lister bought it at a farm at Hove Edge, and had it transferred to his home. Concerning its earlier history, Mr Lister knows nothing. The bed is in oak and, as the sketch shows, there are massive pillars, beautifully carved. It is one of the treasures sometimes found in country dwellings, and their discovery by people who appreciate their value often saves them from rough usage or destruction. The fire-place is also an interesting feature of the room
