In this Page, I propose to give details of any recent or forthcoming
changes to
Malcolm Bull's Calderdale Companion
-
29th August 2020:
I have removed the hit-counter from the website
-
The Images of England website of photographs has been closed.
All links from the Calderdale Companion to the Images of
England have been removed
-
Because the BBC have moved their images to the ART UK
website, and the images now have new filenames, I have deleted all
the links from the Calderdale Companion as they no
longer work
-
I have withdrawn the facility which – when you hover your mouse over
the red keyword of an entry for an
individual would display the Internal Reference Id which
identifies that entry on my database – because users of iPads
cannot use the hover feature.
Instead, I propose to display the Reference to the far right
of the entry keyword
I hope that this will simplify the task of referring to a specific
entry in emails and other correspondence
-
In February 2018, the website moved from Rootsweb to a new host – Equator Websites.
If you notice any pages or images which were lost or forgotten in the
move, please let me know.
-
Because of the lack of interest, I have discontinued the set of pages
which gave composite lists of all The Photographs &
Images which are accessible from
Malcolm Bull's Calderdale Companion
You can still access the photographs from the individual entries on
the Website
-
I am currently adding details of men and women who died in
World War I, taking their names from local war memorials and other
sources.
I am filling in their details from the Commonwealth War Graves
Commission website.
Please
email me
if you can spare time to look up some of the details for me
-
Please contact me at
calderdale@aol.com
-
You can use the standard form to send details of your
forebears to
the Calderdale Companion
-
As part of a plan to reduce the size of the pages and improve the
loading times for large pages, I have reorganised the entries
beginning
Bailiff Bridge ...
Brighouse ...
Calderdale ...
Elland ...
Halifax ...
Hebden Bridge ...
Heptonstall ...
Mytholmroyd ...
Rastrick ...
Sowerby ...
Sowerby Bridge ...
Todmorden ...
into separate Sidetracks
I have also reorganised individuals with
surnames – such as
Aaron ...
Ackroyd ...
Ainley ...
Aked ...
Akroyd ...
Alderson ...
Alexander ...
Allen ...
Ambler ...
Appleyard ...
and so on – into separate Sidetracks
Please
email me
if you encounter any problems or you have any comments on this
reorganisation
-
I have removed details about the modern equivalent value of
historical sums of money mentioned in the entries, such as
1/- in 1787 is roughly the equivalent of £63.10 today
These values were based upon online sources, and were difficult to
maintain on
the Calderdale Companion
-
I have begun to add the names of people who are buried in the
many Cemeteries and Burial Grounds in the district.
If you would like to add details and/or photographs of your
forebears' graves, please
email me
-
I have consented to the The British Library at Euston Road,
London including
the Calderdale Companion
in their web archiving programme.
This means that the information recorded here will be available long
after, you, I and ROOTSWEB have long gone
-
In the entries for people with more than 1 child, I have numbered the
offspring
(1) Mary; (2) Thomas; (3) Richard;
(4) Harold
This numbering was done by computer program, so please
email me
if you notice any errors or oddities
-
I have added a facility to allow you more quickly to access a
specific part of a large page in the Main Alphabetic Section of
the Calderdale Companion.
At the head of each page which has more than 50 keywords, there is
a sub-index to that page, for example
Uf
Uk
Un
Up
Us
Ut
on Page U of
the Calderdale Companion.
Clicking on, say, Ut here, will take you to that part
of the page with keywords beginning Ut, in this
case Utlay
-
I have begun to add links to the
UK National Inventory of War Memorials
for some local war memorials and monuments
-
I have reorganised the use of the
icons which indicate that several photographs illustrate an entry.
Instead of using 2 or more of these icons in an entry, I have
replaced these by the single
icon which jumps to an index page listing all the available
photographs for that entry
-
I have begun a project to provide English translations of some of the
Latin epitaphs and memorial inscriptions which are reproduced in
the book
The Monumental Inscriptions in Halifax Parish Church
Until such time as I get around to the task, if you would like to
contribute your translation of any of the – as yet – untranslated
epitaphs it would be most welcome
-
Because of the lack of interest, I have discontinued
the Visitors' Book
You can still
email me
with any questions and comments about the website
-
I have added some new icons
to go directly to the SideTracks on the most popular
topics
-
Remember that your contributions / comments / corrections to
Malcolm Bull's Calderdale Companion
are always welcome – just
email me
If you need inspiration, there is a list of specific
questions which you might be able to answer
