On 13th May 1915, HMS Goliath was torpedoed by the Turkish Navy, and sank in the Dardanelles with the loss of 570 of her crew of 700.

Leading Telegraphist George Ambler perished on the Goliath

Hiley's friend and colleague Thomas Barron, also a stoker in the Navy, died in the War.

Hiley was discharged in 1919.

Jane died in Halifax [Q1 1931] (aged 45).

Hiley died in Blackpool in 1957.

Joseph had reached Halifax (the return half of his ticket to Ripponden was found on his body), and was returning, and that he had got down from the train when it halted at Milner Royd Junction with the intention of walking down the line and catching the 8:40 pm train for Ripponden. A goods train would have passed him at 8:41 pm, just as the Ripponden train had restarted, and he may have been struck by either train

He was a piecer [1841] / a woolsorter [1850].

He and his brother James emigrated to the US and arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana on 12th August 1847.

In 1857, he moved to business in Bonaparte, Iowa.

He worked as a superintendent of the wool sorting rooms with Meek Brothers at Meek's Mills.

In 1870, he established J. W. Whiteley & Sons, a grocery store business in Bonaparte. This became one of the largest and most successful businesses in south-eastern Iowa.

In 1880, the restaurant established by son Philip Sheridan Whiteley moved to merge with the grocery store. In July 1886, the building was completely destroyed by fire. The property was not insured. A new building was constructed in November 1886.

He founded the Whiteley Opera House in Bonaparte [1886]. It was rebuilt [1895] after the original building was destroyed by fire. The present building seats 600.

He was a member of the Freemasons and other orders.

On 25th April 1852, he married (1) American Sarah Ann Giles in Connellsville, Philadelphia.

He was severely wounded [28th May 1917].

He died of wounds the following day in hospital in France [29th May 1917] (aged 25).

He was a woollen manufacturer employing 8 men and 2 boys [1851].

He manufactured a high-grade woollen cloth of high density and weight, which was largely used in the making of protective overcoats and capes for coachmen as they drove carriages and stagecoaches from seats exposed to the weather. It was virtually impervious to rain and snow.

He frequently travelled over the Pennines to Lancashire on horseback leading a packhorse with his samples. Blackstone Edge, in those days, was a lonely road with a risk from highwaymen. Samuel carried a pair of Parr pistols together with powder horn and shot and also a blunderbuss.

The weapons were passed down through the family. John Albert Duke Barnett loaned the blunderbuss which was then lost.

On 1st June 1815, he married Sarah Firth [1792-1867] at Halifax Parish Church.

They had no children.

Their niece, Ruth Hannah, was living with them as their adopted daughter at Soyland [1871].

They lived at Far Height, Soyland [1871, 1881, 1891].

William died at Far Height [17th February 1882].

In 1891, Ann was a clothes mender.

She died 15th September 1899

Baptised at Ripponden Church [1823].

Like his father, he was a paper-maker. On 1st January 1868, he became a partner in John Whiteley & Company. In 1868, he took over the lease of Brookfoot Mills, Horsforth in Wharfedale. He later bought a paper mill at Skyreholme, near Appletreewick, in Wharfedale.

In 1887, his sons Benjamin, Samuel and William founded B. S. & W. Whiteley of Pool in Wharfedale. This business still exists as Whiteley Limited, although there is no longer any family involvement.

On 18th February 1849, he married Hannah, daughter of George Lumb, at Halifax Parish Church.

William died 20th June 1865 (aged 24)  and was buried at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot 3220].
