The Wood, Fixby



The Wood is a house at Fixby.

John del Wode is mentioned in the court rolls of 1276, and the surname appears frequently from then until the mid 17th century. The Latinised version of Wood was del Bosco.

The Wood family of Fixby remained at the Wood until about 1570.

Owners and tenants have included

On 20th September 1580, a conveyance

by Agnes, late wife of Edward Saltonstall of Wood, and daughter and heir of John Wodd, late of Wodd, to Richard Brooksbank and others, as trustees, of her house called Wodd in Fixby with lands etc. in her own occupation, 8 messuages in the occupation of John Romesdeene [Ramsden] and James Oledill [Gledhill] and the reversion of a messuage, and after the death of Alice, her mother, now wife of Henry Bannester, for the use of herself for life, with successive remainders in tail to her son and heir Edward Saltonstall, her son John Saltonstall, and the right heirs of the grantor. If she die before Edward is of age, the trustees to hold for him and his sisters Agnes, Mary, Susan, Judith and Hester until he come of age

There is a deed of 1st September 1609, conveying

from Edward Saltonstall of the Wood, Fixby, to John Thornehill of Fixby Hall the messuage called the Wood etc. in Fixby and two messuages in the tenure of Jane Saltonstall, Edward's mother, and Hugh Stansfeild the same that were the inheritance of Agnes Brook, wife of Thomas Brook, daughter and heir of John Wood late of the Wood and heretofore wife of Edward Saltonstall, grandfather of the present Edward Saltonstall.

In 1831, George Crowther, built a house called The Wood above Grimescar Road. This appears to be the same location as the original.

In 1854, the house is called Grimescar Cottage.

In the 1950s, it was again known as The Wood
