He was a regular soldier for 12 years / employed by Denham's.

He married Beatrice.

During World War II, as a reservist, he was called-up [1939], and he served as a Corporal with the 7th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was in Iceland for 2 years.

He died 30th October 1944 (aged 38).

He was buried at Bergen-Op-Zoom War Cemetery, Netherlands [Grave Ref 7 C 10].

He is remembered in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance

He was a gamekeeper [1881] [1891] [1901] / an innkeeper at the Grey Hound Inn, Sutton Howgrave, Bedale,  Yorkshire [1911] / in the Follifoot-Harrogate area.

In December 1875, he married Hannah Verril [1855-1919] in Mansell Lacy, Herefordshire.

Born in Rudding Park, Harrogate.

He was a farm servant in Ripley, near Harrogate [1911].

During World War I, he served as a Private with the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He transferred to the Labour Corps.

He died 26th November 1918 (aged 24).

The Todmorden & District News [13th December 1918] reported his death with a photograph


Private Edward Powell, Duke of Wellington's Regiment, died aged 24.

Joined up in February 1916 and sent to France about five months later.

He was wounded and very badly gassed. On recovery, he was sent to work on a farm at Holly Moor Side, Chesterfield, where he succumbed to bronchial pneumonia.

He lived at 3 Back Patmos, Todmorden.

He was one of six brothers who served in the war. One was killed in the Dardanelles and a second one in France

 

He was given a military funeral at St Peter's Church, Holymoorside, Derbyshire.

He is remembered in the Todmorden Garden of Remembrance

His brothers Roger and Godfrey George also died in the War

He was Vicar of Heptonstall [1877-1902].

On 27th January 1874, he married Eliza Palmer [1844-1923] at St Alkmund's Church, Derby.


On his marriage, he added the name Palmer

He was a carter in lodgings with the family of Charles Henry Chadwick  at 29 Walton Fold, Todmorden [1911] / a carter at Stansfield Corn mill.

On 15th July 1911, he married (1) Jessie Ormerod [1891-1913] at St Paul's Church, Cross Stone.


Jessie Ormerod of 5 Swan Place, was born in Todmorden, the daughter of Thomas Henry Ormerod, plate layer

She was a cotton cop winder for W. L. Sandbach & Company at Hope Street Mill, Todmorden [1921]

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 2nd/5th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He died of wounds [29th March 1918] (aged 28).

Private Roger Powell, Duke of Wellington's Regiment, died from wounds in the Third Canadian Hospital at Doullins, France, on the 29th of March, aged 28.

He left a widow and two little children

 

He was buried at Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No.1, France [Grave Ref V C 49].

He is remembered on Todmorden War Memorial, and on the Memorial at Saint Paul's Church, Cross Stone.

His brothers Edward Gordon and Godfrey George, and brother-in-law John Robert Ingham, also died in the War.

Sarah Ann gave birth to a daughter: Irene Powell [b Q2 1919]. The father is recorded as Not known in 1921.

Born Albert Arthur Powell. Popular Rotherham-born comedian. He appeared on the music halls, radio and TV.

In 19??, he auditioned at the Palace Theatre. His mother, Lily le Maine, herself a variety artiste, sat at the back of the auditorium, and being hard of hearing, she repeatedly urged Sandy to Speak Up. This was where he developed his catch-phrase

Can you hear me, mother?

When he signed his first record contract he was offered a lump sum but opted for royalties of one penny per record; his first record alone sold over half a million copies
