In 1835, he was on the List of Electors for the Northowram Township of the Halifax Polling District in the election for the MP for the West Riding.

On 11th March 1846, an explosion at the foundry killed Hanson and his bookkeeper, Dan Taylor. Hanson was scalded and badly disfigured, and only lived for 20 minutes.

At the inquest, it was stated that the explosion was caused by

want of water in the boiler

and that Hanson, who had responsibility for the boiler, would have been charged with manslaughter had he survived the accident

On 20th June 1868, there was an explosion at the Woodman Works, when John and one of the proprietors, Joseph Kitson, were covered with debris. Joseph managed to extricate himself without injury but John was killed instantly.

Constable of Halifax [1769] and innkeeper of the Upper George Inn, Halifax. He was involved with the Cragg Vale Coiners and was arrested by the Bailiff, Francis Simpson of Bradford, on charges of coining.

After his arrest on 23rd December 1769, he claimed that he had business to settle at the Upper George and an accomplice distracted Simpson whilst Hanson absconded.

A wanted notice was published in The Leeds Mercury [26th December 1769] for his apprehension

In 1925, he went to study in Paris. In France, his teachers included Fernand Leger who regarded Hanson as one of his most important students. He worked in France for 8 years, working with the cubist painter, Amédée Ozenfant, and with Le Corbusier.

In 1935, he returned to England and switched from an abstract style to purism.

In 1938, he went to the US and had a studio in New York for 7 years.

In 1945, he was appointed as an instructor at Cornell University. He had many exhibitions and one-man shows in America and Paris [1928-1935] and also in London [1937], in Wales and at Bankfield Museum [1938]

He was a friend of Jeremiah Stead.

In 1878, he strongly disapproved of changes which were being made to the Chapel, and regularly visited Stead's grave to report on the progress of the ruination. He ultimately approved of the finished Chapel.

Born in Halifax.

He was a mill manager with W. H. Rawson & Company [for 68 years].

On 10th November 1853, he married Sophia Bailey [1823-1876] at Halifax Parish Church.

Child: Arthur William

They lived at Ryburn Terrace, Sowerby Bridge.

William Furniss died 20th February 1900.

Probate records show that he left effects valued at £996 10/8d.

Probate was granted to son Arthur William and his wife.

Members of the family were buried at St Peter's Church, Sowerby: Sophia [1st August 1876]; William Furniss [23rd February 1900]

In [Q3] 1852, he married Mary Nuttall [1831-1898] in Halifax.


Mary was the daughter of Robert Nuttall

  1. Robert Edward who died 30th May 1856 (aged 27 days) 
  2. Mary Ann who died 25th April 1861 (aged 1 year & 9  months) 
  3. Eliza Jane [1862-1st July 1866]
  4. Emily [1864-30th August 1866]

Mary died 7th December 1898 (aged 67).

William James died 6th August 1905 (aged 74).

The couple & the children were buried at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot 3407] with Mary's parents & an unidentified Walter Hanson who died 9th November 1872 (aged 12 days)

On 26th December 1918, he married Agnes Dulce, younger daughter of Dr Robert Thompson Farrer, at Brighouse Parish Church

During World War II, he served as a Leading Aircraftman with the 77th Squadron Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.

He succeeded to the business of John Morton Barbour.

In [Q1] 1888, he married Cora Sunderland [1860-19??] in Bradford.

They lived at 38 Elmfield Terrace, Savile Park [1901, 1913].

He died 28th December 1913.

John, son of Hans or Henry de Rastrick, was the first member of the family. He changed his name and in 1377, he is recorded as John Hanson. It has been suggested that he did this in order to avoid confusion with his grandfather, John de Rastrick.
