General Points

Guide stoops were required at all cross-roads by law after 1697

In 1700, local magistrates ordered that they should show the name and distance to the next market town, and that they should be erected on moors and commons

Because of the woollen trade and the practice of putting-out work, many milestones well outside the district show the distance to Halifax, a centre for the local cloth trade

Most of the local milestones are Grade II Scheduled Monuments
